MP: September 17th is among most life-changing dates in Belarus’ history

The Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly on International Affairs, Oleg Gaidukevich, shared his views on the importance of National Unity Day for Belarusians

The parliamentarian explained why the date of September 17th is pivotal for Belarus, “It is an extremely important holiday for us, and it is one of the life-changing dates in Belarus’ history. If it were not for it, Belarus would not exist within the modern borders, there would be no sovereignty and the Belarusian nation. For us, September 17th is a stage of current Belarus’ formation.”

Mr. Gaidukevich commented on what some pseudo-historians are promoting, “They tried to teach us that there were no good dates in the history of our country at all, saying that September 17th is a controversial date. Why? We actually got our territory, and we liberated Belarusians. Such an attitude to history demonstrates disrespect for the nation.” The parliamentarian believes there are no bad pages in the Belarusian history.

National Unity Day is timed to the anniversary of a Polish campaign of the Red Army. It began on September 17th, 1939, and Western Belarus was annexed to the BSSR as a result.
