Tourists come to the city of Fuji-Kawaguchiko, located 50km southwest of Tokyo, to capture a view that has become popular on social networks: a convenience store with essential goods against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Fujiyama.

“The crowds have led to complaints of litter, danger to road traffic and illegal parking. The 20m-wide black barrier to obscure the mountain is due for completion in the middle of this month,” the publication reads.

On Thursday, people ran out into the streets at this site, climbing on poles to get a better view. At some point, a convenience store employee jumped out of the store yelling at the tourists to shoo them away.

“I’ve seen people take to the roads, use electronic kickboards without following traffic rules, and get into accidents. There have been a lot of accidents involving foreign tourists lately,” said a local resident.

Mount Fujiyama has long been a popular place for domestic and foreign tourists to visit. But local residents and officials have condemned the rising levels of pollution, accidents and environmental damage that were seen during last summer’s climbing season.
