Media: previously unknown waltz by Chopin found in New York
The manuscript for a previously unknown waltz by Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849) was found in the Morgan Library & Museum (New York, USA), TASS reports
According to The Times, the score, already declared one of Chopin’s ‘ten lost waltzes’, was bequeathed to the museum in 2019, but not catalogued properly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The notation said, “Sheet music […] for an unknown piano piece, probably written by Chopin, but unsigned.”
Only now, having examined the paper, the penmanship, and the music style, experts concluded: the piece was indeed written by Chopin. The manuscript is dated between 1830 and 1835, after the composer had already left Poland for Paris.
Museum curator Robinson McClellan said although there’s no signature, ‘analysts are confident that the style and the handwriting are unmistakeably Chopin’s’.
“It’s not the most complex piece by Chopin, but it’s one of his most authentic styles you can imagine,” said superstar pianist Lang Lang (China).
According to experts, it’s the full manuscript, but the piece itself is shorter than other well-known waltzes by Chopin. The tune in the A minor key is about 80 seconds long.
