Media: planet’s deepest underwater sinkhole found near Mexico
Researchers have discovered the world’s deepest blue hole in the waters of Mexico near the Yucatan Peninsula, which is more than 420m deep, TASS reports
According to the Infobae portal, the depth of the Taam Ja' underwater cave is more than 420m, which significantly exceeds other well-known underwater funnels, such as the Sansha Yongle blue hole, located in the South China Sea and whose depth is 301m.
The portal reports that, despite their ‘mysterious and intimidating appearance’, blue holes are considered ‘oases of biodiversity’ because they are the habitat of numerous corals, shellfish, sea turtles, sharks and other underwater organisms.
Blue holes are water-filled vertical caverns, or sinkholes, found in coastal regions and located below sea level. They got their name because of the bright contrast of deep dark blue water and light ocean water located around them.
