Media: EU may allow wolf hunting due to increase in their population
The ambassadors of the European Union countries have voted in favour of lowering the protection status of wolves. As a result of the likely approval of this decision, the EU states may allow wolf hunting, TASS reports.
The Euractiv portal reported that the ambassadors’ proposal includes the downgrade of wolves’ status from ‘strictly protected’ to ‘protected’. Only representatives of Spain and Ireland opposed such a decision.
The AFP news agency explained that downgrading the protective status of wolves will enable the EU states to allow hunting them, except in cases of self-defence. Now this initiative must be approved by the relevant ministers of the EU members.
It is noted that farmers in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria constantly have to build bonfires to prevent wolves from attacking herds of ruminants.
