Media: China exploring possibility of producing EVs in Europe
Chinese carmaker GAC is considering options to launch production of electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe to circumvent EU duties on imported goods from China, TASS reports
According to Reuters, which refers to General Manager for GAC International Wei Haigang, the Chinese state-owned carmaker does not sell its cars on the European market yet, but presented an electric SUV – tailored to European buyers – at the Paris Motor Show. The concern sees Europe as one of the key areas that remains ‘relatively open’ despite Brussels’ decision to impose high tariffs on Chinese electric cars.
“Local production [in Europe] would be one of the ways to resolve this,” Wei Haigang noted of the current situation, stressing that the company is ‘very actively exploring this possibility’.
The GAC added that such discussions are ‘at a very early stage’. The company has not yet made a decision on whether to build a new plant in Europe or take over an already existing facility.
Reuters reports that the compact SUV on display in Paris – a 520km range vehicle called Aion V – should launch in some European markets in mid-2025, priced at less than €40,000.
