Makei: today iron curtain is erected not in a square, but in a cube
At present, the once fallen iron curtain is being erected not in a square, but in a cube – as stated by Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, BelTA reports
In an interview with Izvestia newspaper, the Minister noted, “Do you remember how at one time everyone was happy that the Berlin Wall collapsed and the iron curtain that existed during the USSR fell? Today this curtain is being erected not in a square, but in a cube. These are physical fences, as well as psychological, moral, and political. They are being built between Belarus and Poland and the Baltic States.”
Vladimir Makei reminded that Belarus deliberately introduced a visa-free regime for citizens of neighbouring countries. From April to the present alone, about 280,000 foreigners have visited Belarus.
“They had the opportunity to see what is happening in reality in Belarus: are the store shelves really empty, is there really a KGB officer assigned to every foreigner, are people really grabbed by the hands in the street and thrown into prisons. People come and share their impressions on social networks. And even this is no longer liked by the authorities of neighbouring states. Penalties have been introduced for broadcasting positive materials about Belarus and Russia. What kind of freedom of speech can be discussed in this case?” asked the diplomat.
Vladimir Makei added, “As far as the physical fence is concerned, which is arranged on our border, dozens of poor animals gather there. Previously they quietly migrated from one side to the other, because this is their natural habitat. Now the footage of dying animals speaks for itself. We sent letters to a number of environmental organisations, international organisations, the Council of Europe and UN structures. However, we see zero reaction because we know who dominates in these structures.”
