Makei: statements about the need to continue hostilities in Ukraine are contrary to common sense

Minsk, as a direct neighbour, is interested in being a participant in Russia-Ukraine negotiations on a strategic peace settlement and is ready to create all the necessary conditions for their continuation on Belarusian land – as underlined in his speech by Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, who is taking part in the UN Security Council meeting in New York

“The final agreements should take into account, among other things, the interests of the Belarusian side,” the Belarusian representative noted.

According to Vladimir Makei, the strengthening of security – national, regional and global – should be carried out not through the buildup of NATO’s military potential, but through universal bilateral and multilateral confidence-building mechanisms acceptable to all, “Only an equal and mutually respectful dialogue aimed at eliminating differences can prevent confrontation in our region.”

The Foreign Minister also pointed out one immutable diplomatic truth, “All wars end sooner or later at the negotiating table. The sooner these negotiations begin, the better. Therefore, it was surprising to hear the statements of some sitting around this table that it is necessary to continue hostilities, because these statements are absolutely contrary to common sense.”
