Lukashenko at Dazhynki fair in Korma: we did not leave our people to fend for themselves

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has taken part in today’s solemn ceremony of honouring farmers at the Dazhynki-2024 festival-fair in Korma, Gomel Region

Addressing the participants and guests of the holiday, the Head of State expressed gratitude to all rural workers and noted, “Spring and summer are the hottest time for villagers, and we always celebrate our Dazhynki under the rays of the not very bright autumn sun. Today we don’t have the scorching sun, which was glaring down on the Gomel Region for a month and a half, but it doesn’t matter. The Gomel Region and the whole country really need such weather. You, the workers of the open-air workshop, are used to encounter changes. I bow low for your hard work, for your patience and your ability to work in spite of all adversity and circumstances which can force many to give up, but not you. This is very peculiar for our Gomel Region.”

The President recalled a troubled event: the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, “We had to face a huge human tragedy. It seemed like a dead end and there was no way out. Think back to those days. At that time, they tried to convince us that it was impossible to live here, that we should forget about these territories, settle people out, abandon everything without worrying about what would happen to these lands… You remember that we categorically rejected such proposals. I understood well that ensuring a decent life in the Chernobyl-affected areas in the realities of the collapse of the 1990s would be an almost impossible task. But the scariest thing was: where to go? Where to run? What to do? People were stunned.”

“No one did anything like that in those days, and even didn’t know how to do. There were no recipes. However, the decision was made and we did not leave our people to fend for themselves,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.
