Lukashenko: there can be no state without independence

On July 3rd, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko gave a short interview to Russia Today TV channel after the military parade. In particular, correspondent Konstantin Pridybailo asked the Belarusian leader why it is very important to convey the essence of independence, the essence of Belarus’ liberation from Nazi invaders to young people.

“You, young people, need this to preserve independence, because without it there can be no state. If there is no state, there is no us. We are just slaves without it. Therefore, it is most important to preserve independence. As you can see, together with you [Russia] we’re trying and something is working out,” Aleksandr Lukashenko replied.

“Why is it with Russia that such a wonderful and independent alliance is being formed?” the journalist asked.

“Because Russia and we share common values, ideas and goals. We have no similar relations with any other state. After all, it’s not for nothing that we have spent so much time in one state. Therefore, we have never even had such a question,” the Head of State noted.

When asked which period of independence was the most difficult in the three decades of his presidency, Aleksandr Lukashenko responded, “The most difficult period for a real President is the high trust of the people. Every day – morning, evening, night — you wake up in a cold sweat and think that people have trusted you, and you have no right to let them down. This is the hardest thing for a true President.”
