Lukashenko participates in nationwide subbotnik in Khatyn for second year in a row
The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is taking part in the nationwide subbotnik at the Khatyn Memorial Complex, and representatives of labour collectives and Belarusian State Youth Movement activist are also working at the site today
In 2022, the Head of State also worked in Khatyn during the nationwide subbotnik, and Aleksandr Lukashenko's team then planted apple trees and wild rose near the symbolic wooden frames of houses, also taking part in the laying of a historical memory park with 149 trees (the same number of villagers were killed). “It is a symbol that – no matter what difficulties and times there may be – life goes on. It is here as well, despite this cruel historical symbolism," the President told reporters in April 2022.
The renovation and revival of the complex was launched at that time, and all the funds generated last year at the nationwide subbotnik went to the development of Khatyn. In line with Decree No. 176 on Belarusian Youth Construction Site as of May 22nd, 2022 signed by Belarus’ President, the status of the Belarusian youth construction site was given to the objects of capital repair and reconstruction of the Khatyn Memorial Complex. Seven student teams from all regions and the city of Minsk participated in the reconstruction of the memorial complex.
On March 2nd, 2023, on the day of the 80th anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy, a requiem rally was organised in the memorial complex with participation of the Head of State. A significant event took place then as well: the opening of a new museum built as part of the Khatyn reconstruction.
The Khatyn State Memorial Complex was opened on July 5th 1969, and it is a historical and cultural value of the 1st category. Last year, its employees organised 1,282 excursions and 3 exhibitions; in January-February 2023, their number made 138.
