Lukashenko: officials should act more quickly in cutting wood prices for housing construction

At a meeting with the Council of Ministers’ leadership, the President of Belarus noted that some of his instructions are being realised too slowly. In particular, the Head of State stated that responsible officials do not always respond promptly to Presidential orders. As an example, Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned his recent proposal to elaborate measures to cut the cost of timber for construction of residential buildings. The President announced the need for such a decision on August 18th, during his visit to the Grodno Region.

The Head of State drew attention to the fact that much forest is dying in the country, trees are not removed and processed on time.

“Getting [timber] for making windows, doors, floor boards, for carpentry and housing construction at the beginning of the year is a catastrophe. Prices are extremely high. I voiced this, but the Government keeps silence (though a month has passed). There should have been not simply proposals by now, but governors should have already begun acting – starting with agriculture," Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed. “We continue to worry – [asserting that] it is impossible to make specialists stay there. But how can you do this? Let’s start with building good houses for specialists in villages. We have lines that make it possible to build a house within 24 hours. It will only be needed to bring and put it on the foundation. Give it to families with many children. We will single out people and make sure that, having received this timber for free or for half the price, they would not resell it later. I am simply giving you an example: when an idea is presented by the President and it needs to be implemented quickly, there is silence.”
