Welcoming the guest, Aleksandr Lukashenko said, “Despite all sorts of twists and turns in the international arena in the relations between Belarus and Azerbaijan, you and my very close friend and brother Ilham Heydarovich [President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev] should know that there are no closed topics in Belarus-Azerbaijan relations. We don’t violate any norms of international law, and our friendship is not directed against third countries. We are doing everything for the benefit of our nations. The fact that we boast such good friendly relations is a long story, dating back to the time of Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev. Despite the age difference, we were very friendly with him and always found mutual understanding and support. I often say to Ilham Heydarovich, the current President of Azerbaijan: thank God we’ve managed to maintain the relationships that your father and I had. Therefore, you are welcome to Belarus. You are a close person to us, representing a very close country. I even think that we do not have closer relations with other countries than with Azerbaijan (and Russia, of course).”
