“As I am informed, 45 percent of the region’s roads have surface defects. There are complaints from the population about the work of housing and communal services, landscaping. Citizens are concerned about the state of the bus fleet and the operation of public transport, especially during peak hours,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The Head of State gave an obvious example, “What is the condition of the bridge on the main artery connecting Vetka and Gomel? It’s in an emergency condition. Moreover, people ‘bombarded’ with appeals that there is no railway crossing in the Zapadny micro-district of Zhlobin. Children and their parents have to go to kindergarten and school along the railway tracks. This is how the road was reconstructed... And what is the condition of the M10 highway connecting Gomel with Brest?”

Aleksandr Lukashenko called the flood being a more than urgent problem of this spring, “The topic is not new. Sozh, Dnieper, Pripyat are rivers with a certain temper, although the old-timers say that this has not happened for a long time. Do we take everything into account and are we always ready for such situations? Why did it turn out to be some sort of emergency this year?! And there was some information vacuum on the part of the local authorities... Most issues should be settled locally and without social explosions. You are managers. In a critical situation people expect prompt, reasonable and understandable actions, as well as reliable information from you.”

The President urged the participants of the meeting to have a constructive and frank conversation. The Head of State separately addressed Chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee Ivan Krupko, “Are you holding a meeting of the regional executive committee tomorrow? There you will have the opportunity once again, taking into account today’s meeting, to sum up the results of the first quarter, develop a plan for further actions, make adjustments to the plans for the socio-economic development of the region, and make the necessary decisions, including those dealing with personnel issues.”
