Lukashenko: I’d rather demand from you now than I’ll give you rifle and send to front tomorrow

During his meeting with representatives of the Gomel Region, the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, underlined the priority of the economy in ensuring the stability and security of the country, BelTA reports

The Head of State recalled how the problems in Ukraine began, “You remember that there was no Ukraine before the war; it was ‘poisoned’. This was the richest country. They had everything both in industry, and especially in agriculture. Black fertile soils, etc. If we had all this, we would have developed better than the Emirates. It all started with loss of control, the idea that the market would regulate everything itself, with headless executives... One thing led to another. Corruption, bribes at all levels, division of property, everything was cut and distributed. The country was gone. This is where it all started. This is the main reason.”

“In order to find the guilty, they began put pressure on the Russian language, on the Russian-speaking population, just like it was in our country during Shushkevich and Poznyak. At that time, nationalism in Belarus also began to overwhelm the country. And they were already overwhelmed with it. It is understandable that neighbours look at you and rub their hands in glee then. That’s how it started,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure strong economy. In this case, according to the President, there’s no need to worry too much about military security. “That’s why I always say: give me the economy, give me the socio-economic status, and I will deal with the defence. This is especially important for you. You can see what’s happening. A lot of people have come to you, there are a lot of relatives,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

“So, the economy, power, and unity of people won’t allow a war to be unleashed. That’s why I demand from you so harshly. Because it is better to demand from you now than I will give you a rifle and send you to the front tomorrow,” the Head of State added.
