Lukashenko: every piece of land should be used for the benefit of the country
It is impossible to further delay reclamation, we need to solve this problem – as stated today by the President of Belarus during the Republican seminar-meeting on restoration and use of reclaimed land
Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that the restoration and improvement of the efficiency of the use of reclaimed lands began in the 1970s and lasted almost two decades, “In terms of scale and significance for our republic, it was, in fact, an analogue of the GOELRO [the first Soviet plan for national economic recovery and development] plan of the young USSR during the NEP [new economic policy] period. Enormous efforts and resources were invested. The country turned part of the swamps into arable fields and revived agriculture. The intensification of production and the change in rural life are the two main positive results of that colossal work.”
According to the President, today reclaimed lands in Belarus cover 37 percent of all agricultural lands: three million hectares. The main part is concentrated in the Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel and Minsk regions.
“A third of crop production is produced on these lands, including more than half of the green fodder needed for animal husbandry. Therefore, the issue of whether or not there will be land reclamation in Belarus is not even discussed today. My most severe demand remains the same: every piece of such land should be used for the benefit of the country,” Aleksandr Lukashenko underlined.
