Lukashenko demanded to provide Belarus with cucumbers and tomatoes in off-season
President Aleksandr Lukashenko has instructed responsible persons to solve the problem dealing with fruit and vegetable cultivation in the off-season during his today’s meeting with activists of the Gomel Region, BelTA reports
"It is bad that we cannot feed our people with cucumbers and tomatoes in the spring. It is very bad, virtually disgusting – so this problem needs to be solved over this year and the next one. Is it difficult to build necessary greenhouses now? After all, we know how to do it all ourselves," Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.
The Head of State emphasised that it is not necessary to make greenhouses mindlessly: they should be built in the farms where people can work with them, and where there are opportunities for that. "A greenhouse means earnings. Like with milk, you will have early money to be able to pay people," he said.
"Orchards are also in focus. It is necessary to uproot old trees and plant new ones. It is not good that we are importing apples. Cannot we grow apples ourselves, like in Poland? We can. We are simply not engaged into this. Meanwhile, this is import substitution," the President noted.
