Lukashenko came up with CIS Heads of State Appeal on occasion of 80th anniversary of the Victory

One of the items on the agenda at the CIS Summit in Moscow was the adoption of an appeal to the peoples of the Commonwealth and the world community in connection with the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The document was presented by the President of Belarus, and there was a simple explanation for that.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted in this regard, “Our country has been given this right by history itself — the history of the Soviet republic, which was the first to be attacked by the Wehrmacht divisions, the first to retard their victorious march through Europe. This right was given to us by the heroes who stood to death in the Brest Fortress and on the outskirts of all Belarusian cities, blocking the way to Moscow. Representatives of seventy nationalities fought shoulder to shoulder with Belarusians, and all of them knew that they were standing up to the absolute evil of the world.”

The President emphasised that the names of many are immortalised in the names of avenues and streets of Belarusian cities, in the monuments and memorials countrywide. Among them are Marshal of Victory Georgy Zhukov, USSR heroes Rafiev (of Azerbaijan), Avakian (of Armenia), Iskaliev (of Kazakhstan), Asanaliev (of Kyrgyztan), Azizov (of Tajikistan), Annaev (of Turkmenistan), Yakubov (of Uzbekistan), and many others.

“We remember our heroes, and we also remember the pain, grief, and suffering of millions of our compatriots," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “Every 30 seconds, the bell of Khatyn reminds us that over 600 Belarusian villages were burned down along with women, children and the elderly. No matter how many years have passed, we still hear the echo of the mute cry for help from the exhausted inhabitants of besieged Leningrad, the crying of millions of Soviet mothers and children whose sons, daughters and fathers did not return from the battlefields.”
