Lukashenko: Belarus will do everything to ensure regional nuclear safety

Belarus will do everything to ensure regional nuclear safety – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko during today’s meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi

“Of course, there was, there is, and, I think, there will be a lot more speculation regarding the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant [BelNPP]. You can see this in Lithuania. They are worried not only about our nuclear power plant, but also about the general situation in Belarus. However, this is politics, let’s not talk about it,” the Head of State noted.

“You should know that we are committed to security, peace and will do everything (that we are capable of, that depends on us) in order to ensure regional nuclear safety. You can be sure of that. We are reasonable people and do not rush into all sorts of adventures,” the President of Belarus accentuated.

Aleksandr Lukashenko says this because recently Ukraine has been fantasising that Belarus allegedly wants to seize the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In this regard, the Head of State noted, “I just still can’t figure out what’s the basis of this fake? Why does Lukashenko need the Chernobyl station? We have already suffered from what happened after the explosion at this nuclear power plant, which, we did not build, we did not maintain and we did not blow up. However, the main trouble fell on a quarter of our territory, and we are still struggling with the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.”

The President assured the IAEA Head, “This is complete stupidity, which even surprised me. We could not imagine even in a terrible dream that we would have to capture the Chernobyl station and then be responsible for it. There is no such need on the part of Belarus, nor, believe me, on the part of Russia. There was not, there is not, and never will be.”

As for the further constructive co-operation with the IAEA, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted, “I think that the problems that exist (and they will always be in the world) regarding nuclear safety and in Belarus-IAEA relations will be overcome. I promise you that for sure. This should be our interest and your interest as the head of our international atomic organisation.”

“You have arrived in a good and friendly country, where very peaceful people live, who are committed to the development of nuclear energy. Future belongs to nuclear energy. We really need nuclear energy for our dynamically developing economy,” the President summed up.

The Head of State once again thanked Rafael Grossi for the support and assistance that the IAEA provides to Belarus in the development of peaceful nuclear energy, and expressed hope for good and close co-operation.
