Lukashenko: Belarus’ Constitution became truly people’s state-forming document

Today, on March 15th, our country is celebrating Constitution Day – for the 30th time in its sovereign history. A meeting of the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, with judges of the Constitutional Court and persons who contributed to the formation of sovereign Belarus is timed to coincide with the anniversary date. The country’s top officials, state figures of different years, deputies and members of the Council of the Republic, representatives of state organisations, political parties and public associations were invited to the event at the Palace of Independence.

Addressing the guests, Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled that a new stage in the history of modern Belarus – sovereign and politically independent – began thirty years ago on this day, “It was then that the fundamental legal foundations for the development of our state and society were laid. Think about it: three decades ago. This is just a moment in the history of the world, in the history of humanity. Meanwhile, this is a whole life for us – those who have been building our country for all these years. It was complex, contradictory, sometimes on the verge of possibilities, but, of course, interesting life which – most importantly – was fully devoted to our beloved country. The Constitution of Belarus has become our guide along this path; it has become a truly people’s state-forming document, which was especially evident during our referendums.”

According to the President, the participants in today’s event have something to remember, have something to tell those who have been growing up all this time, and today – together with the older generation – share responsibility for Belarus’ future, “That’s why we have gathered together today – representatives of different generations and different fields of activity: judges of the Constitutional Court, managers, public figures, leaders of political parties, scientists, people’s representatives. Each of those present in this hall, over the years, participated directly or indirectly in the development and improvement of the first and only Constitution of sovereign Belarus, as well as in the implementation of its provisions across all areas of state and public life. Behind us are thousands and thousands of people – also active participants in this process. Together with the Basic Law, we – the generation of modern Belarusians – have gone down in history of the formation of national statehood. At the same time, we are aware that our Basic Law was not born on barren, empty soil.”
