Lukashenko arrived at St. Elijah Church in Orsha for Easter
President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has visited St. Elijah Church of the Holy Dormition Convent in Orsha on the bright Easter holiday. As is traditional, the Head of State celebrates the feast of the Resurrection of Christ together with parishioners in one of Belarus’ churches.
The convent in Orsha was founded in 1631 near the Kuteinka River flowing into the Dnieper and was called Kuteinsky. Today, the monastery complex includes the Assumption Church, St. Elijah Church (temple of the Prophet of God Elijah) and the baptistery (baptismal church). According to legend, in 1706, during the Northern War, Peter I prayed in St. Elijah Church for the gift of victory over the Swedes.
In 1880, a new stone church of the Prophet Elijah was erected on the site of an ancient dilapidated building.
