Lithuania’s defence spending grew 5-fold in recent years
Lithuania said that over the past few years the country has increased allocations for the purchase of military equipment and ammunition fivefold, TASS reports
Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anusauskas said, “Over the past four years, the allocations earmarked for the purchase of weapons and ammunition, for the material and technical supply of the army, have increased fivefold.”
At the same time, he noted that significant amounts will also be spent on defence capabilities in subsequent years.
“Over the next four years, about €1bn will be given for these purposes,” Anusauskas underlined.
Lithuania’s 2024 budget envisages historically high defence spending of 2.75 percent of GDP. Last year this stood at 2.52 percent. Lithuanian politicians are seeking to increase military funding to 3 percent of GDP as soon as possible and are actively seeking additional sources of funding.
