Lavrov: IOC current leaders pushing global sports movement into crisis
The current leaders of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and federations are plunging the world sports into a crisis – as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting of Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO) Supervisory Board, TASS reports
“Specialists who will deeply immerse themselves in this reality, who will develop promising ways to lead the international sports movement out of the crisis – which the current heads of sports federations and the International Olympic Committee are plunging it into – will definitely be much-in-demand,” the minister said.
According to him, efforts to adapt Russian Olympic athletes to new realities deserve special attention. “Through the educational programmes of MGIMO, the Olympian Foundation and the Russian Olympic Committee, they are introduced to non-Western, so to speak, elements of the international sports movement,” he noted. “I have absolutely no doubt that understanding what is happening in the world sports, understanding the need to make it truly democratic, depoliticised will open up great prospects.”
