Kochanova: on subbotnik, we are beautifying our country

Members of the Presidium, senators and employees of the secretariat of the Upper House of Parliament have taken part in the nationwide subbotnik today – to plant juniper and spruce bushes, and to landscape the Masyukovshchina Memorial Complex territory

This site has been chosen not by chance: it has long been under the patronage of the Council of the Republic. Moreover, members of the Youth Council, Suvorov Military School cadets and schoolchildren from the nearby schools came to help. More than two hundred people gathered to work.

“A nationwide subbotnik is traditionally held in April,” Natalya Kochanova, the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, said. “It is wonderful that the whole country unites is doing important and necessary things for the benefit of Belarus. Actually, landscaping of the city territories and the sites of such memorial complexes began long time ago in Minsk: this work has been done for a month already. However, on this day, we always go out together to make our country even more beautiful. We are planting juniper in this holy place today. This site is sacred not only for the capital and Minskers, but also for our whole country. This is our memory.”

According to Ms. Kochanova, the events that took place at the memorial site have a special response in hearts of all Belarusians – especially in the Year of Historical Memory. The Chairperson of the Council of the Republic added, “This is a landmark place for us – not only because it is under our patronage. It was here, on this territory, that terrible events took place. People stayed in an open-air concentration camp, in any weather. It is important that a church and a museum are situated here now; everyone should visit the latter – to know, remember and prevent such a tragedy that our older generations have experienced.”
