Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said that the parties confirmed their commitment to the plan against the background of British media reports about a possible revision of the programme by the new British government. According to The Times newspaper, London may do this because of concerns about costs. Media publications have already been denied in Tokyo. Commenting on these reports, Japanese Cabinet Secretary General Yoshimasa Hayashi said that joint development is very important and expressed his willingness to continue this work.

In December 2022, Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom agreed to jointly develop a new generation fighter – to be ready by 2035. The fighter is designed to become an alternative to the developments of the US and the EU. Interoperability with US and NATO military hardware will be its central concept.
