Italians propose banning under-14s from owning cell phones, under-16s from having social-media profiles

An initiative group led by education expert Daniele Novaro and psychotherapist Alberto Pellai appealed to the Italian Government with a proposal to ban teenagers under 14 from having smartphones and those under 16 from having social-media profiles, TASS reports with reference to ANSA agency

According to the source, the initiative has been supported by Parliament already, and a discussion has been launched there on the issue.

Psychologists state that gadgets negatively affect children's health, both physically and emotionally. In this regard, Italy has proposed setting the minimum age for purchasing a personal smartphone at 14 years old and having a social-media profile at 16 years old. At the same time, it is assumed that parents of teenagers will be responsible for violations.

Earlier, a ban was imposed on the use of smartphones and tablets in Italian schools until the eighth grade.
