Italian Pompeii to limit daily visitor numbers to 20,000
Representatives of the ancient Roman archaeological park of Pompeii in southern Italy said they would limit the number of visitors to 20,000 people per day as a response to the site’s surging popularity, Reuters reports
The change, effective from November 15th, comes after a peak of more than 36,000 daily entrances on the day when admission was free.
"The park's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said that reducing human pressure on the ancient site was important for conservation and safety reasons," the publication reads.
The new restriction follows attempts by other tourist hot spots to control the number of visitors, including Venice (Italy), with its entry fee system.
As reported by Italy’s Culture Ministry, more than 4 million people visited Pompeii in 2023, which was 33.6 percent more than in the previous year: the number of visitors made 11,200 on average daily.
