IOC: European Parliament resolution contradicts unifying mission of Olympic Games
The decision of the European Parliament to condemn the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is contrary to the unifying peacebuilding mission of the Olympic Games – as reported by the IOC press service, TASS writes
First of all, the IOC noted that there is no decision yet ‘to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the qualifications for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris’. There is research on the primary concept of the conditions of participation.
“Unfortunately, the European Parliament ignores the serious concerns expressed by the two Special Rapporteurs of the UN Human Rights Council. Moreover, the resolution is in clear conflict with the unifying peacebuilding mission of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Charter endorsed by the European Union and its member states,” the International Olympic Committee said.
