Interior Minister: fewer murders registered in Belarus, and detection rate of phone crimes is growing
The Interior Ministry’s employees focus primarily on crime prevention, and this gives noticeable results: i.e. the number of murders has decreased by 17 percent since early 2022 – as reported by Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakov after his today’s meeting with the President focusing on the state of the operational situation in Belarus and development of the system of internal affairs bodies.
According to Mr. Kubrakov, the number of crimes with grievous bodily harm and the number of murders has decreased since the beginning of the year, “Our employees manage to find dysfunctional families and apartments and to respond to the observed situation in a timely manner. This is producing good results.”
At the same time, more fraud related crimes are registered, and – as noted by Mr. Kubrakov – these are primarily cyber fraud cases, in addition to those which are commonly known as ‘hello, Mom!’. “We are working in this regard... Scammers, being outside of Belarus, call back (mostly elderly citizens suffer here), talk about some illegal act committed against close relatives, and citizens give their money to these criminals. By now, the situation has been changed,” he explained.
The Interior Minister added that almost all calls come from outside Belarus, and call centres are mainly located in Ukraine. “We have analysed the situation. When the media reports that electricity is disconnected on the territory of Ukraine during the special military operation or that there are some problems with the Internet, then not a single call is received in Belarus. We continue working and detaining couriers. The detection rate of such crimes is about 80 percent, but we are trying to work on prevention and to inform our people on how to act and whom to address in case of such calls,” he said.
