Indonesia joining BRICS bloc as full member
The Brazilian government announced that Indonesia will formally join BRICS as a full member, Reuters reports
Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, previously expressed its desire to join the group as a means of strengthening emerging countries and advancing the interests of the so-called Global South.
"Brazil, which holds the bloc's presidency in 2025, said in a statement that member states approved Indonesia's entry by consensus as part of an expansion push initially endorsed at the 2023 BRICS summit in Johannesburg," the publication reads.
Brazil noted that Indonesia's bid received the green light from BRICS in 2023. However, the Asian country asked to join the bloc after the presidential elections held last year. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto took office in October 2024.
