Indian PM called on Global South countries to unite
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit held today in a videoconference format, stated the importance of unity among the countries of the Global South, India TV reports
"This is the need of the time for the countries of the Global South to unite, speak out as a singly whole and become each other's strength,” the politician said, adding that the world is currently in an uncertain environment, and situations similar to military ones create problems for the development of countries.
“We are meeting at a time when there is uncertainty all around. Military situations have created problems on our development path. We are already facing the challenges of climate change, but we are also concerned about health, food and energy security. Terrorism, extremism and separatism pose a serious threat to our society. The technological gap, the economic and social problems associated with technology are also coming to the fore. Global governance and financial institutions created over the past decade have proved unable to deal with the challenges faced in this century," News18 TV channel quoted him as saying.
In his speech, Mr. Modi also touched on India's G20 agenda, focusing on development issues and the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member.
“When India assumed the presidency of the G20 in 2022, we promised that we would give a new look to the G20. The Voice of Global South became a platform where we widely discussed development issues and priorities. Based on the aspirations, hopes and priorities of the Global South, India prepared its G20 agenda. The G20 was conducted with an inclusive and development-oriented approach. The historic moment when the African Union gained permanent membership in the G20 became the most striking example,” the Prime Minister said.
According to Mr. Modi, the Voice of Global South is a platform where ‘the needs and aspirations of those who remain unheard’ can be voiced. “I believe that our strength lies in our unity, and we will move in a new direction," he concluded.
The 3rd Voice of Global South Summit led by India is based on discussions of previous meetings and is aimed at solving critical problems such as conflicts, food and energy security, and climate change. Special attention is paid to the sustainable development of developing countries. The purpose of the event is to empower the countries of the Global South by providing a space for exchanging points of view and setting priorities on a number of issues.
