Hungary may consider possibility of building third nuclear power plant
Hungary may consider the possibility of building a third nuclear power plant, but no longer at the Paks NPP site; the construction technology will be determined only after choosing the territory, RIA Novosti reports
The head of the office of the Paks-1 director general, Pal Kovacs, said that the timing of the construction of a new nuclear power plant will depend on how fast the Hungarian economy will develop.
Earlier, Energy Minister Csaba Lantos said that Hungary is considering the option of building a third nuclear power plant, possibly a small modular reactor.
“Lantos said that because it is clear that it is no longer possible to build a third power plant at the Paks site. Probably, we need to build in another place, I don’t know what technology. But first we need to find a territory that will meet the requirements of supervision,” Pal Kovacs explained, adding that the search for a new earthquake-resistant site and its licensing is a long process, without which it is impossible to start choosing a technology.
