Hungary believes Ukraine’s admission to EU threatens security of Europe
The coalition of Hungarian ruling parties does not support Ukraine’s membership in the European Union, since such a step would create a threat to the security of all of Europe – as noted by István Hollik, the Communications Director of the Fidesz Hungarian Civic Union, TASS reports
The Fidesz spokesman called even the start of negotiations with Ukraine on the country’s entry into the EU unacceptable.
“The position of Fidesz Hungarian Civic Union and the Christian Democratic Party on this issue is clear: even the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine – which is in a state of war – is unacceptable. This is a security threat for the whole of Europe,” noted István Hollik.
He also called Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU a financial burden that ‘the already weak European economy simply could not bear’. Moreover, István Hollik said that the issue of membership will be raised at national consultations, which the Hungarian government plans to hold in the near future.
“Brussels did not give European citizens a chance to express their opinion, but Hungarians have the opportunity to do so,” the Fidesz representative underlined, urging his compatriots to take part in this kind of survey.
“Let’s not allow Brussels to decide for us issues that affect us,” he suggested.
