Hungarian FM on changing Russia’s nuclear doctrine: there will be no risks after end of Ukraine conflict

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto commented on the change in Russia’s nuclear doctrine, stressing that there would be no risks outlined in it if the conflict in Ukraine ended, RIA Novosti reports

Earlier, at a meeting of the permanent meeting of the Security Council on nuclear deterrence, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed discussing an issue related to updating the foundations of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in case of aggression, including if the enemy – using conventional weapons – poses a critical threat to sovereignty. Mr. Putin added that it is proposed to consider aggression by a non-nuclear state with the participation of a nuclear one as their joint attack on Russia.

Commenting on this news, Mr. Szijjarto noted that ‘such events are mainly arguments in favour’ of the Hungarian position on the need for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, because if it ‘ends, then such risks can be eliminated’.

The Hungarian FM drew attention to the fact that the international community should pay much more attention to the search for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, since it ‘definitely does not have a solution on the battlefield’.
