Guterres: Middle East is on verge of full-scale conflict
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that the Middle East region is on the verge of a full-scale conflict, TASS reports
At a meeting of the UN Security Council convened in connection with Iran's strike on Israeli military installations, Antonio Guterres said, “The Middle East is on the verge. People in the region are facing the real threat of a devastating full-scale conflict. It's time to reduce tensions and escalate. It's time to step back from the brink. It is vital to avoid any actions that could lead to a major military confrontation on several fronts in the Middle East.”
The UN Secretary General added that civilians ‘bear the brunt’ and pay the highest price for military action, “We have a shared responsibility to actively involve all stakeholders in preventing further escalation. Neither the region nor the world can afford new wars.”
Mr. Guterres also noted in his speech that he condemns both the strike on Israeli diplomatic facilities and Tehran's attack on Israeli military facilities.
