Gusakov: no reason to be afraid that AI will surpass human intelligence – programme is created by people

This opinion was expressed by Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Forum and IT-Academgrad Exhibition: Artificial Intelligence in Belarus

According to him, artificial intelligence (AI) is among the most rapidly developing scientific fields in the world. Nearby there’re only IT and biotechnologies, and Belarus is not lagging behind in this regard.

“Technologies based on AI are rapidly developing in our country. Their scope of application covers almost all areas of the economy. It cannot be any other way, since the world is changing and there is active movement in modern technologies. Now it is impossible to imagine the full life of any person without them,” noted the Head of the NASB Presidium. “We believe that this development will be even faster. With the help of AI, it is already possible to design anything, even an analogue of intelligence, the human brain, and edit the human genome. And that’s not all. AI underlies many technical systems and the organisation of unmanned production. With the help of AI, products are printed, including food products, any of the most complex goods – it’s just necessary to set the appropriate programme. AI is capable of creating works of art: music, poetry, etc.”

At the same time, Vladimir Gusakov is confident: there is no reason to be afraid that AI will surpass human intelligence, because the programme is created by people, “When there is a discussion on the topic that we will soon become slaves of AI, I can answer: everything will depend on what programme we lay down. I think AI should and will serve for the benefit of humans.”

The Artificial Intelligence in Belarus exhibition showcases over 100 developments in the field of AI from the country’s research organisations, educational institutions, and private companies. Vladimir Gusakov expressed his conviction: the field of AI is becoming a good brand, and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus should lead this direction in the country.
