Greek politician: EU began raising retirement age
A former MEP, professor of EU institutions in Crete University, Notis Marias, said that Europe is beginning the process of raising the retirement age to 74 years, and Greece has become among the first states to take steps in this direction, RIA Novosti reports
It is reported that the Greek Parliament has adopted a bill, one of the articles of which provides that the programmes of the state employment service can also include unemployed people ‘over the age of 67 and up to 74 who do not have the required retirement experience to qualify for a pension’.
It is also noted that the pension system reform was later approved by the EU leaders, who – with the consent of Greece and Cyprus at the summit in Porto on May 8th, 2021 – decided to extend the work experience period to 74 years.
According to Notis Marias, there is now a pan-European tsunami of raising the retirement age to 74 years.
