Google to build data centre in Uruguay worth $850m
Google has announced that it will build a new data centre in the southern Uruguayan city of Canelones at a cost of $850m, TASS reports
President of Google Cloud for Latin America Eduardo Lopez said in an article published on the Google Blog portal that Google’s Uruguayan data centre will become the second in Latin America, and the first centre in this region was built in Chile in 2015. Lopez pointed out that one of the main goals of Google’s development in this region at the current stage will be the widespread introduction of services based on AI technology, against the background of growing demand for them among the local population.
The head of the Google Cloud regional division also informed about the corporation’s plans to strengthen ties with universities and research centres in Uruguay. The company is already working with the University of Technology and the University of Montevideo in Uruguay in the field of technology implementation in training courses. Government agencies have become the main partners of the corporation in the country: the National Development Agency and the National Agency for Research and Innovation.
