Germany introduced stricter border control
According to the German Interior Ministry, on September 16th, the country re-introduced temporary controls on its western and northern borders as part of the fight against illegal migration and cross-border crime, Reuters reports
The restrictions are part of measures taken by Germany to toughen its stance on illegal migration after a sharp increase in the number of people arriving.
“Temporary border controls will be set up at the land borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for a period of six months, which will be another obstacle to free movement within the European Union,” the publication reads.
They are already operating at border crossings with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.
These measures have attracted criticism from Germany’s neighbours. Polish PM Donald Tusk has called for urgent consultations with other affected countries that fear they will have to accept more migrants and the situation at the border will affect trade.
