German Armed Forces to undergo reforming
The Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundeswehr) will receive a fourth type of armed forces as part of the structural reform: it will be engaged in activities in the cyber and information space – as announced by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, RIA Novosti reports
Mr. Pistorius announced the news about the replenishment of the country's armed forces during a press conference broadcast by Phoenix TV channel. “In the future, the Bundeswehr will have one operational command, four types of armed forces and a support command,” he said.
The organisation of a unified operational command is caused by the need to command and control the armed forces from a single centre.
As result of the reform, the forces operating in the cyber and information space will be added to the three traditional types: ground and air forces, as well as the navy. Mr. Pistorius explained that the new division will deal with hybrid threats – such as disinformation campaigns, countering cyber-attacks, and others.
The Defence Minister stated that the reform of the Bundeswehr structure is aimed at ensuring the readiness of the German Armed Forces for emergencies, including war.
