Gaidukevich commented on Moldovan election and referendum voting

The presidential election and the EU accession referendum in Moldova drew to a close amid a wave of critique from both the global community and the local citizenry. Oleg Gaidukevich, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, shared his opinion on the Moldovan voting campaign with Alfa Radio.

“The preliminary reports show that, supposedly, 50 percent voted in favour of the EU ascension. Another number came in early in the morning: 49.9 percent were against. They are doing their best to get the result they want by nook or by crook. How can the dictatorial Brussels let Moldova slip away? But I want us all to understand one thing: despite the voting fraud, despite the huge money invested into the EU integration support, despite suppression of the opposition, a huge number of Moldovan nationals were deprived of their right to vote. Look at what was happening in Russia, look at how many Moldovans live there: about 300,000, if we go by preliminary estimates. How many voting bulletins did they get? Ten thousand! Just two polling stations were functioning. Observers in Moldova were kept out of the stations till the last possible moment yesterday. And this is Europe that never fails to lecture us about how to hold elections,” Mr. Gaidukevich said. “But you know what? They say it’s the Kremlin’s fault again hundreds of thousands of Moldovans voted against the EU ascension and for the opposing candidate. It’s the Kremlin’s fault that in the 30 years Moldova has supposedly been on its way to the EU, their people were getting poorer, living worse every day, while they were selling their country off? How much timber did they cut down and sold, how many enterprises destroyed, how many of their people up and left to all corners of the world, because they had no jobs and were being pushed ever closer to war on top of that? This is what that vote means, ultimately. Once again, the so-called European democracy and freedom showed us its true face. That’s how they do things. Brussels got its claws into Moldova, and doesn’t want to let it go,” he added.

Commenting on the presidential election, the MP said it was also an utter failure, “In reality, the incumbent President who broke every promise she’d made, failed that election. She wanted to win in the first tour, but was unable to. She was reluctant to go to rallies around the country, preferring to visit European diasporas instead, but the reception for her was chilly even there. Not to mention impoverished Moldovan cities full of people she’s tricked. That what the Moldovan election means for me. So it’s definitely not for them to lecture us how to hold elections in 2025.”
