France to further tighten EU migration rules
The French authorities intend to promote the tightening of migration policy at the EU level to curb the flow of illegal migrants – as stated by Benjamin Haddad, the French Minister Delegate for Europe, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, TASS reports
In an interview with the European edition of Politico, the Mr. Haddad said, “Citizens are actively demanding that immigration be brought under control in all [EU] countries. This does not mean closing borders, it means choosing criteria for granting permission to stay on our territory and the ability to expel those who have no right to stay here.”
The politician noted that the work of the new composition of the European Commission will give the EU countries ‘the opportunity to start discussing the next step’ within the framework of the EU policy aimed at tightening migration rules.
At the same time, Mr. Haddad refused to provide more details about what innovations France wants to introduce into the EU migration policy. According to him, in this sense, Brussels ‘should not have a taboo’ on discussing any measures, including the visa regime and co-operation with third countries in this area.
