France passed law raising retirement age to 64
The French authorities have passed a law to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 years – as announced at a meeting of the National Assembly by PM Elisabeth Borne, RIA Novosti reports
The document, which caused mass protests across the country, was approved without a vote in parliament. The deputies tried to interfere with the speech of the head of government, because of this she had to shout over the parliamentarians.
“We will not take the risk of hours of debate, we will not risk the future of our pension system. This reform is necessary. According to article 49.3 of the constitution, the government takes responsibility for this law,” Borne said.
The president of the French National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, confirmed this decision.
Hundreds of French people are reported to have gathered outside the National Assembly building to protest.
