First Lady of Nigeria on Belarusians’ friendliness, cuisine and tradition of giving flowers to women

During her today’s meeting with Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova, the wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, said Belarusians are the friendliest people she has ever met

“I am overwhelmed with emotions. All my meetings in your country — including with the Belarusian Women's Union and the Education Minister – were cordial. I have visited different countries, and you are the friendliest people I have ever met. I like Paris and its atmosphere very much, but I did not notice that people there are the same as here. In Belarus, I have learnt of a tradition when men give flowers to women, and I will definitely bring this tradition to my country. When I arrived in Belarus, I was welcomed by a man with a bouquet of flowers – and I got surprised. Later, at various meetings, I was also given flowers. I made a note to myself that this wonderful practice should be brought to Nigeria, and our men will perhaps become friendlier. I have also been impressed by your cuisine: it is very healthy, organic and useful. I enjoy Belarusian food and understand why agriculture is the pride of your country,” the First Lady of Nigeria said.

Oluremi Tinubu proposed opening an embassy of Nigeria in Belarus to enhance co-operation between the two countries. “From the point of view of trade, we know that your agricultural products are a great resource, which brings you money,” she said. “We are interested in co-operation in this area, as well as in trade and technology – especially in industry. We are also ready to liaise in education, science and culture, and we can organise student exchanges.”

Speaking about the co-operation between the parliaments of Belarus and Nigeria, the distinguished guest noted that it is also represented by two chambers in her country. Oluremi Tinubu stressed that the Belarusian and Nigerian parliaments actually work under a similar model, and she expressed willingness to develop active inter-parliamentary co-operation.
