Farmers’ hunger strike in Polish Sejm lasting for a week, and two persons already sent to hospital for health reasons
A farmers' hunger strike has been going on in Poland’s Sejm (Lower House of Parliament) for a week, as they are demanding to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, TASS reports
The RAR agency quoted the words of one of the participants of the hunger strike, Jaroslaw Zaremba, “We are getting increasingly weaker, our health is deteriorating due to the refusal of food.”
The hunger strike began on May 13th by six farmers, who were taken to the Sejm by deputies of the former Law and Justice ruling party. Two of the hunger strikers were hospitalised on May 18th for health reasons. The four others continue the action.
In turn, Donald Tusk refused to meet with these people. “I am not planning a meeting with this group of protesters. They are not representatives of Polish farmers,” he stated.
Mass protests of farmers began in Poland on February 9th. Agricultural producers demand to limit or completely ban imports of cheap agricultural products from Ukraine, strengthen support for national livestock production, and also express disagreement with the EU's Green Deal strategy, which provides for achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.
