Expert: violation of European laws concerning migrants is fraught with EU-Poland conflict
By joining the European Union, Poland has committed itself to comply with European laws concerning migrants, but it does not actually want to follow them, and this could lead to a conflict with Brussels – as noted by the Dean of the Journalism Department at the Belarusian State University, political expert Aleksei Belyaev, in his talk with Alfa Radio
According to the expert, the migration crisis in Europe will intensify, “The Polish authorities have officially allowed shooting at illegal migrants at the border. In general, the anti-migrant policy is getting stronger within all European states. The United Kingdom has joined the process quite unexpectedly. In case of an escalation, other countries will follow the example of Poland and start defending their borders with even greater intensity. At present, Germany is one of the final destinations for refugees, but it can ‘flare up’ unexpectedly: anti-migrant sentiment is strong among some Germans.”
As for Poland, Mr. Belyaev believes its attitude towards migrants will not improve. “The policy of the Polish state has not changed yet: it did not want and still does not want to accept migrants. The brutality towards these people will continue. Beaten foreigners are being thrown into Belarus’ territory, but this is nothing in comparison with what could happen: corpses are likely to follow. We know that the Polish authorities hide the bodies of migrants on the country’s territory and want this to be kept secret. The number of victims is much higher than we know,” he added.
Although being a member of the EU, Poland demonstrates a cynical attitude towards refugees and violates the European laws related to them. “This could lead to a conflict between Warsaw and Brussels. The latter has a force acting in the interests of migrants. Obviously, this will bring nothing good to the Polish state,” Mr. Belyaev said.
