Expert commented on Poland's violation of Belarusian airspace: it is not in our interests to bring everything to conflict

On September 28th, Belarus’ Defence Ministry reported that a Polish helicopter had violated the state border twice, and the circumstances of the incident are being established now. In his talk with Alfa Radio, the Dean of the Journalism Department at the Belarusian State University, Aleksei Belyaev, commented on the actions of the Polish side.

According to the expert, the violation of the border of Belarus has already become a routine matter for Poland. “Belarus takes it calmly, because it is not in its interests to escalate and bring everything to a conflict. Belarus, in principle, stands for peaceful resolution of all issues. Therefore, if such a situation has happened and been recorded by objective means of control, a reaction of Belarus’ Defence Ministry will definitely follow. We can see that Belarus does not take any active actions, does not shoot down these helicopters – not excluding the fact that there may be different reasons, including poor training of pilots (as it was a month ago). Accordingly, in this case it is in the interests of Belarus to simply resolve this conflict, to find out all objective reasons for what has happened, and to notify the Polish side that we, naturally, do not allow the violation of our border, that we monitor the situation, but any escalation of the conflict in this case is absolutely unnecessary for Belarus,” he said.

Mr. Belyaev added that Belarus does not seek to unleash new wars, and that was among the key theses that President Aleksandr Lukashenko voiced the day before at the ceremony of presenting credentials by the ambassadors of foreign states.

“It is just possible to say that this incident can be used primarily on the territory of Poland as part of the political struggle that is currently in full swing there on the eve of elections. Therefore, this is not our problem now, but Poland's. Let them figure out what is happening in their country, and why," the expert concluded.
