EU launched investigation into TikTok, AliExpress
The European Union is conducting inspections against AliExpress, TikTok and seven other major online services within the framework of the Digital Service Act (DSA), aimed at controlling the activities of digital platforms, TASS reports
As informed by Agence France-Presse, the AliExpress online trading platform is suspected of failing to fulfil obligations to combat the sale of health-threatening goods, in particular counterfeit medicines. The European Commission sent a request to the company for detailed information back in early November 2023. According to the source, based on its results, an official procedure is now being conducted within the framework of the DSA in order to protect consumer rights.
An investigation into eight online services, including TikTok, Facebook, Google, YouTube and X has also been reported. According to the source, they cannot control the spread of deepfake technology. The platforms will only receive a request for details of their activities, but will be required to pay heavy fines in case of violations.
Since August 25th, the European Union has strengthened control over the activities of nineteen online platforms within the framework of the DSA; according to officials, the latter are united by the category of ‘especially large’ and include services such as X, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Google and Amazon Store. According to the European Commissioner for Internal Market Affairs, Thierry Breton, the protection of children and the fight against disinformation will be among the priorities of a new law. He also noted that the European Commission will carefully check all these platforms for compliance with European rules and apply sanctions if violations are detected.
