Erdogan: Turkiye needs civil constitution to end tradition of coups
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the need to prepare and adopt a civil constitution of the country instead of the one in force after the military coup of 1980, TASS reports
“With the current constitution, Turkiye cannot move forward, it needs a new one. By adopting a new basic law, Turkish democracy must end the tradition of coups. I believe in the need to implement the ideal of a new civil constitution for 85 million [Turkish residents] in the new century. Future generations deserve to be governed by a liberal constitution,” the Turkish leader noted in his speech following a Cabinet meeting (broadcast by the TRT Haber TV channel).
Recep Tayyip Erdogan has previously submitted issues related to amendments to the constitution for national approval twice. After the referendum in 2017, the parliamentary form of government in the republic was replaced by a presidential one, but the new constitution was not adopted in the light of these changes. After being re-elected to a new presidential term in May 2023, Erdogan called the adoption of a new constitution one of the main tasks of his administration.
