Energy Minister: Belarus taken all measures to ensure extreme safety of its nuclear power plant
Belarus has taken all the measures necessary to ensure a high degree of safety of its nuclear power plant – as informed by Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich in his talk with the Belarus 1 TV channel
According to Mr. Karankevich, the plant’s construction is provided by the Rosatom State Corporation. “This is the first foreign site where the construction of a nuclear power plant with the use of generation III+ water-water reactors is provided, meeting the most modern and the most stringent safety requirements. This is the most proven technology. Such blocks have already been built. They are operational in the Russian Federation, and are being built in Turkiye, Egypt and Hungary. Unique approaches towards nuclear and radiation safety are in place here. The reactor plant or the reactor building has a double shell made of heavy-duty concrete, and it will not be damaged even in the event of an earthquake, flood or hurricane," he stressed.
The Energy Minister added that Belarus co-operates on nuclear and radiation safety issues with the leading international organisations – such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Association of Organisations Operating Nuclear Power Plants.
“We have been liaising with the IAEA for quite a long time on the entire range of activities, conducting all the missions recommended by the agency from 2012 to 2022. The nuclear infrastructure development and ensuring of nuclear and radiation safety at the facility were highly appreciated. We are always open in this direction, also perfectly fulfilling all the requirements imposed on Belarus as a novice country that is engaged into the construction of a nuclear plant," Mr. Karankevich said.
According to the Energy Minister, some practices developed during the Belarusian NPP construction are recommended to other novice countries in the same sphere.
